The Plight of Iraqi People under Occupation • Over a million violent Iraqi deaths since 2003. Many more due to breakdown of hospitals, water pollution and depleted uranium contamination. • Over a thousand professionals, academics, journalists, and medics murdered. • 4.5 million Iraqis displaced Iraqis, half abroad. With little education and job prospects a powder keg of anger and violence is threatening the whole region and the world. This dwarfs the scale of the Palestinian displacement of half- a century ago. • 30,000 Iraqi detainees at any one time by the US forces, and twice that number by the Western-armed Iraqi forces, ridden with sectarianism and criminal gangs. The ‘Iraqi government’ admits to 700 women detainees accused of terrorism. Rape and abuse cases have never been investigated. • Western multinational Corporations are making blatant oil fields grab, encouraging partition, ethnic and sectarian cleansing in Iraq. Conference programme: 10.30 - 10.45 Welcome and Opening: Haifa Zangana 10.45 - 11.30 Forced Migration; Mazin Yunis & Mundher Al Adhami, Chair: Nawal Zangana 11.30 - 11.45 Coffee break 11.45 – 12.45 The intellectual cleansing: Dr Ismail al–Jalili, Mohammed Kamil Aref, & Prof. John Akker - Chair: Rusul Muhrij 12.45- 1.45 Lunch 1.45 – 2.45 Iraq's Guantanamo Camps: Sabah Al Mukhtar . Lecture by William Dalrymple: From the Holy Mountain; Christians of Syria and the Modern Middle
East. Followed by screening of unseen footage from a Channel 4 Documentary on the monasteries of Syria and the Christians/Muslims relationship. Venue: The British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y (Map) Time: Arrivals 12.00pm, Start 12.30pm Tickets: available in advance only. £20 for Members and £30 for non-members Remarks:In his highly acclaimed ‘From the Holy Mountain: A Journey in the Shadow of Byzantium’ the award winning writer and historian William Dalrymple recorded his first-hand account of the Christian communities in the Middle East and how they changed over time. Amazed by places like the Monastery of Saidnaya in Syria where Muslim pilgrims far outnumber Christian ones Dalrymple conclude: “The Eastern Christians and the Muslims lived side by side for nearly one and a half millennia because of a degree of mutual tolerance and shared customs unimaginable in the solidly Christian West.” "Today the West often views Islam as a civilization very different from and indeed innately hostile to Christianity. Only when you travel in Christianity's Eastern homelands, do you realise how closely the two religions are really linked." Dalrymple has updated his impressions with several subsequent visits to Syria; his most recent one particularly focused on the Christian Iraqis as they found safe haven in Syria. In this talk Dalrymple will take us throughout this journey, with particular emphasis on Syria. Refreshments and finger buffet available after the lecture |

WHAT I HEARD ABOUT IRAQ - Winner Fringe First Award 2006 - Followed by Debate on the issues raised in the show. (This is a hard-hitting, powerful verbatim documentary drama of the Iraq war, employing direct quotes from politicians, military chiefs, soldiers and Iraqi citizens to reveal the unfolding human story behind the US led invasion of Iraq. In addition to the cast of five speaking the words of dozens of people caught up in the conflict. The show e show started out as an article in the London Review of Books, and was subsequently translated into dozens of languages and published across the world. Adapted for the stage by LA Times Critics Award winning writer Simon Levy, this vital and powerful verbatim drama is a constantly updated documentary of the Iraq war, employing direct quotes from politicians, military chiefs, soldiers, and Iraqi citizens to reveal the unfolding human story behind the US-led invasion of Iraq. "What I Heard About Iraq is that rare thing, an impassioned and dynamic piece of verbatim theatre" Stunning photographs also provide a constantly changing backdrop to the cast of five speaking the words of the dozens of people caught up in the conflict. This unique and constantly evolving show will also be followed by a free post-show discussion with the company after every performance. An international cast of five is directed by Hannah Eidinow, who has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, at the Royal Court, and previously achieved Edinburgh success with Fringe First winner Gone in 2004, which transferred into the West End. "However many newspapers you've read, this is a show that joins up the dots and reminds you that you can't just take words at face value but must learn to read between the lines" In Levy's words, the play is "neither fiction nor speculation; it takes audiences into the war and confronts them with the human drama, the human toll. It is not about history, or about something going on 'over there.'" It is about what's going on right now, and how people worldwide are (and are not) reacting to it. Time: 8pm Venue: Arena Theatre, Wulfruna Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 1SE (Map link) Tickets £9 Full Price and £7 Concessions - Tickets and Information (01902) 321 321 www.arenatheatre.info http://www2.wlv.ac.uk/arena/Spring_2007/Iraq.htm |

Lecture by Samer Akkach: Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi: Poetry, Gender, and Landscape in Early Modern Damascus Venue: The Bury House reception room floor) Bury Street, London SW1Y 6AX, Time: Arrivals 6.30pm – Start 7.00pm Tickets: £10 for Members and £15 for non-members Tickets are available in advance only. Abstract: In early modern Damascus and 18 centuries) there emerged a secular urban space dedicated to pleasure and entertainment. The social elite -- members of notable families, government officials, eminent scholars -- gathered regularly in the city’s private gardens and public parks for entertainment and social interaction. The main form of entertainment was spontaneous yet sophisticated poetic exchanges. According to the records of some of these gatherings, women were absent: these were not family picnics but rather men only outings. The absence of women, however, was compensated by the romantic elegies and love poetry that often mapped the feminine virtues of the beloved over the landscape. The appreciation of nature’s beauty was thus mediated by poetic imageries celebrating femininity and revealing men’s effeminate languishing character that was often concealed in the presence of women. This talk will examine an anthology of such poems complied by a leading literary figure of the period, ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi (1641-1731) of Damascus. It presents the urban, social and natural settings of these gatherings and discusses a selected sample of the poetic imageries constructed and exchanged by the participants. Apart from effecting and celebrating the poetic presence of femininity in the physical absence of women, the anthology is a valuable record of the urban history of Damascus. It presents an image of the city’s urbanity that had completely been effaced by the rapid expansion and modernisation of the and >th centuries, is an Associate Professor in Architecture, History and Theory, and Founding Director of the Centre for Asian and Middle Eastern Architecture (CAMEA) at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is the author of Cosmology and Architecture in Pre-modern Islam and Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi; Islam and the Enlightenment. The talk will be followed by reception |
