Tension Continues in Khan Yunis

Officer in the Preventive Security Apparatus Killed and a University Professor Injured by Unknown Gunmen over the Past 24 Hours

PCHR's information indicates that at approximately 11:00 on Wednesday, 2 August 2006, masked gunmen in a car fired shots at an officer in the Preventive Security Apparatus, Saqer Ismail Mohammad Anbar (44), from El-Qarara, north of Khan Yunis. The officer was riding a motorcycle in Jamal Abdel Naser Street in the Satar El-Gharbi area in Khan Yunis. Anbar was hit by several bullets in the abdomen and left leg, and died instantly. He was dead upon arrival at the hospital.

At approximately 16:55 on Tuesday, 1 August 2006, a number of masked gunmen got out of a car and fired at Dr. Salah Ahmad Abdel Hadi El-Naqa, a 47-year old resident of Greater Abasan. He works as a lecturer at the Islamic University of Gaza, and is considered a Hamas activist. He was shot as he got out of Abu To'eima Mosque near his house. The gunmen fled the scene. El-Naqa was injured by 2 bullets in the knee and right thigh. He was taken to Naser Hospital , where his injuries were listed as moderate.

PCHR strongly condemns the continued use of arms by armed individuals and groups, which has become prominent feature of the ongoing security chaos.  The Centre calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, represented by the Attorney-General, to investigate these crimes, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
